Started in 2001, the .NAME top-level domain is the only one meant for personal websites only. These domains can be personal or fictitious names, aliases and/or other titles people are famous by. At the beginning, solely third-level registrations were permitted, so if you desired to buy john.doe.name, you were supposed to do that under .doe.name. In 2004, however, the registration procedures were liberalized and 2nd-level registrations were also permitted. Already bought 3rd-level names remained functional.
